Le Centre Segal de Montréal ne peut retenir son enthousiasme à présenter la première mondiale de The Angel and the Sparrow : l’histoire vraie de l’amitié unique entre les légendaires Édith Piaf et Marlene Dietrich. Cette version anglophone adaptée par Erin Shields et Gordon Greenberg est inspirée de la version Allemande Spatz and Engel.
Ce drame mettra en vedette vingt de leurs chansons à succès dont La vie en rose et Where have all the flowers gone. La production est menée par deux actrices exceptionnelles de renommée internationale: Louise Pitre dans le rôle d’Édith Piaf et Carly Street dans le rôle de Marlene Dietrich. J’ai eu l’opportunité d’échanger avec les deux comédiennes pour qu’elles me parlent de ce spectacle à venir.
Madame Pitre nous confie : «It’s really cool to be doing a first production of something. This is really a new show and to be originating the role of Piaf in this particular show is quite an honor». Tandis que madame Street nous explique :«II’m really excited about the fact that I get to see Louise Pitre play Edith Piaf and get to be on deck for it».
Les deux chanteuses ont déjà fait partie de la compagnie de Steven Sondheim à New York mais n’ont jamais eu la chance de travailler côte à côte.«We’ve always been fans of each others work, so it’s really great to finally have the chance to work together.»
Elles se sentent prêtes à interpréter ces personnages mais confient que les préparatifs du spectacle se sont faits très rapidement avec encore plusieurs ajustements. «The audience is seeing something new and dangerous in so many different ways», dit Carly.
Afin de se préparer à incarner Marlene Dietrich, Carly Street nous explique avoir essayé de lire tout ce qu’elle a trouvé sur la vie de cette icône. «I started from a place of empathy to figure out what her big dreams and big fears were and when I arrived to the script, that barely talks about any of that, I tried to examine who she is in relation to Edith Piaf, and the story of Edith Piaf’s love life and addiction and so forth and then trying to knit what I knew about Dietrich into how it pertains to Edith Piaf.»
«That’s the thing that’s so neat about the show», nous confirme madame Pitre. Louise, qui a déjà joué Piaf dans d’autres spectacles, est ravie de la direction de cette production. «Her relationship with Dietrich, their friendship lasted and endured all of those years. It’s such a fantastic angle to look at these two women. Basically, they are polar opposite maybe as far as personnality goes but deep down inside they are just looking for the same things.»
«Their struggles were different but they were both struggling. Edith died too young and Dietrich lived too long», complète Carly.
De plus, Louise nous explique apprécier pouvoir jouer le côté plus léger de Piaf que nous ne voyons pas souvent. Les deux sont enchantées de non-seulement travailler avec le Centre Segal mais d’être de retour sur la scène à Montréal.
